About

About The Infinite

The Infinite is built around a simple but timeless idea. The user holds a question in their mind, while the app randomly selects a work, and then a passage from a collection of more than 38,000 public-domain works and over 100 million passages.

The idea echoes an old form of bibliomancy: ask a question, open a book by chance, and consider what the words might mean. The Infinite expands that experience across tens of thousands of works and over 100 million passages.

The user never types in the question, and there is no AI choosing a passage that seems to fit. The reveal comes from random selection, leaving the user to decide what meaning the passage holds, if it holds any at all.

Key Facts

Platforms
Android, iPhone and iPad. Pre-release testing is now open.
Eligible works
More than 38,000 works
Selectable passages
Over 100 million passages
Primary source collection
The collection is built from public-domain works, with Project Gutenberg as the primary acquisition source.
Online randomness
For online reveals, The Infinite draws its random numbers from ANU Quantum Numbers, a service operated by The Australian National University. ANU generates the numbers from a physical quantum process, using lasers to measure fluctuations associated with the quantum vacuum and converting those measurements into random values. The Infinite accesses those numbers through its own protected service and uses them only to choose a work and then a passage. The user’s question is never sent to ANU, and the quantum process does not interpret the words or decide what the passage means.
Offline / fallback
If protected quantum selection is unavailable, the app uses secure randomness generated locally on the device. If the Full Collection cannot be prepared, a bundled Offline Collection is available.
Selection model
One eligible work is selected uniformly at random, followed by one eligible passage selected uniformly from within that work.
Privacy
Journal text, saved passages and other user-created material are stored locally on the device unless the user chooses to delete them. Online services used for randomness, advertising, consent, purchases and testing receive only the information required for those functions.
Business model
Free with banner advertising, with an optional one-time Remove Ads purchase of AUD $2.99.
Testing
Pre-release testing is now underway on Android through Google Play closed testing and on iPhone and iPad through Apple TestFlight.

Media FAQ

What is The Infinite?

The Infinite is an app that reveals one randomly selected passage from a large collection of public-domain works while the user holds a question privately in their own mind.

How does it work?

The user forms a question without entering it into the app. One eligible work is selected uniformly at random, followed by one eligible passage selected uniformly from within that work.

Does The Infinite hear or know the user's question?

No. The question is not entered into or supplied to The Infinite.

Is AI matching the passage to the question?

No. The passage is not selected because an AI system considers it relevant to the user's private question.

Why use quantum randomness?

Randomness is part of the experiment itself: it removes deliberate human choice from the selection. Quantum physics is not presented as a source of meaning or as evidence that a passage was destined for a particular reader.

Where do the passages come from?

The collection is built from public-domain works, with Project Gutenberg as the primary acquisition source. The production collection contains more than 38,000 eligible works and over 100 million passages.

Does The Infinite claim to give answers?

No. It presents a randomly selected passage. Any relevance, coincidence, reflection or meaning perceived in that passage is interpreted by the reader.

Is The Infinite spiritual or religious?

The source collection spans literature, philosophy, religion, history and many other areas of human writing. The Infinite does not require or prescribe a religious or spiritual interpretation.

How does it work offline?

If the protected online quantum service is unavailable, The Infinite uses secure randomness generated locally on the device. If the Full Collection cannot be prepared, the app can use its bundled Offline Collection instead.

What data does it collect?

The user's private question is not entered into the app. Journal text, saved passages and other user-created material are stored locally on the device unless the user chooses to delete them. Online services used for randomness, advertising, consent, purchases and testing receive only the information required for those functions.

Who created The Infinite?

Jen Cooper is a 57-year-old Australian living in regional NSW who created The Infinite and founded JCapps Digital around the project.

What inspired it?

The project grew from a much earlier personal encounter with a book-based random-passage experience and the question of what that idea might become if expanded across a vast library. Read the full origin story.
